Judd Weil April 6, 2021

A handcuffed suspect that a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper was transporting seized control of the trooper’s vehicle and initiated a pursuit between him and KHP units on April 3.

At 12:12 p.m. while transporting the suspect to a detention facility following a prior pursuit involving a stolen vehicle, the trooper witnessed an injury motorcycle crash near Atwood, Kans.

As the trooper rendered aid to a crash victim on K-25, the handcuffed suspect, Joshua Swartwout (23) of Naples, Florida, took control of the trooper’s vehicle.

Upon seizing control of the vehicle, Swartwout took off, speeding down K-25 before turning west on I-70.

KHP and local units pursued Swartwout in the vehicle from K-25 to I-70 until the stolen KHP vehicle’s fuel depleted at mile post 31 near Edson, Kans. in Sherman County.

Swartwout, still handcuffed, attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended and transported to Sherman County Jail.

Upon an evaluation at the scene by EMS, Swartwout was transported to the Sherman County Jail without further accident.

The stolen KHP vehicle remained undamaged.
