DODGE CITY, Kansas—The Friends of Wright Park Zoo (FWPZ) was awarded a grant of $10,000 from the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas to go towards the Redo the Zoo Campaign.
“This grant is from the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas is a great jump start for the Redo the Zoo project,” said Friends of Wright Park Zoo President, Jill Ewy. “It is our first major donation, and we hope that receiving these funds will generate excitement amongst other donors in the community.”
In 2018, the Friends and the City of Dodge City asked the community for feedback and 87% conveyed that they wanted a better zoo. A master plan and site plan were created to make the zoo a worthwhile destination for locals and visitors. The next step will be a competitive request for qualifications process for the exhibit design. Once the successful firm is selected, the City will provide the oversight needed for all construction projects.
“With the $2 million pledged by the City, our group has the responsibility of campaigning to raise the remaining $2.5 million to see the project come to fruition,” Ewy said. “We hope this kick-off gift will help the public see that our campaign to create the new and improved zoo is gaining momentum. We hope that they will be encouraged to donate because Wright Park Zoo is an attraction for the entire community.”
Ewy continued that while the project is not small by any means, the quicker the Friends group can raise money, the sooner the project will come to life and be enjoyed by residents and guests.
