The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a Great Bend, Kans. man on Aug. 26, for killing another man while he was serving a sentence at the Barton County Jail.

At approximately 4 p.m. that Thursday, the KBI arrested Jose Guadalupe Villegas, 27, for second-degree murder connected to the death of 46-year-old Scott E. Deines, of Great Bend. Villegas was arrested at the Barton County Jail, located at 1408 Kansas Ave., while he was already in custody.

Prior to the arrest, Barton County Sheriff’s Office on July 26, posted on their Facebook page, detention officers had discovered an inmate, later revealed to be Scott E. Deines, unresponsive in his cell shortly before 11 a.m. on July 25.

Great Bend Fire Department and EMS were called and pronounced Deines dead at the scene.

The Barton County Coroner’s Office was notified, and the case turned over to the KBI per state statue and the sheriff’s office policy.

Deines was booked into the Jail on July 16, for failure to appear and possession of opiates. Villegas had been ordered to serve out his remaining community corrections sentence at the Jail and has been at the facility since June 30.

The autopsy report during the subsequent investigation, indicated that Deines died of blunt force trauma to his head.

“Nothing further will be released at this time,” said the KBI in a press release.
