Main Street Dodge City in Dodge City, Kan. is among the nominees vying for a $25,000 cash prize in a national contest, sponsored by Independent We Stand, recognizing America’s Main Streets.
Independent We Stand, a national small business movement, kicked-off its sixth annual America’s Main Streets contest in September.
This year’s contest, titled “Road to Recovery,” is a three-month long web-driven competition to help consumers, small business owners and Main Street organizations reward a deserving Main Street with $25,000 in cash and sponsor-related prizes.
Keeping in mind whether local business were hurt by COVID-19 and how communities were affected, Independent We Stand invited the public to help draw attention to the relationship between America’s Main Streets and the long-term success of communities by nominating and voting for their favorite Main Street.
Dodge City, Kan. citizens and others that enjoy and support Main Street Dodge City have the chance to help them advance to the next round by voting.
“Independent We Stand wants to help locally owned businesses not just survive the pandemic,
but thrive in their communities,” said Independent We Stand co-founder Bill Brunelle. “After the
massive nationwide shutdowns due to COVID, we recognize the pride business owners take in
their Main Streets, and we want to help share those stories through our contest. It’s more
important now than ever, to get behind these businesses with our support.”
Main Street Dodge City is a non-profit organization dedicated to the revitalization and preservation of the downtown Dodge City area. Their mission is helped by creating partnerships with public and private sectors.
“We have a Revitalization Improvement Program that offers a grant and a 0-pecent interest loan to our downtown businesses to aid in the revitalization of their buildings,” said Main Street Director Coral Lopez. “The heart of our community is downtown, making it a clear representation of our entire community.
“Therefore, our organization receives funding and support from not only businesses in our downtown but all throughout the community and local government.”
The City of Dodge City has been engaged in the process of a streetscape project designed to overhaul and revitalize downtown and address major aging infrastructure issues.
The $10 million project has been awarded a $2 million grant from the State of Kansas Department of Transportation – Cost Share program to aid in the project and is one of City’s STAR BONDS projects.
Voting is underway for the $25,000 contest and running into the quarterfinals set for Nov. 7.
Semifinal voting will start Nov. 15 to Dec. 12. America’s Main Streets Road to Recovery winner will be announced the following Dec. 20.
